Spelling Homework Information
All second graders will be tested on the 135 Sitton (Whole Group Spelling Program) words. Each student will be asked to read and spell the words, and the goal is for all second graders to read and spell the 135 words with 100% accuracy before the end of the year.
The results of the assessment, in addition to some of their written work I see, will enable me to place your child at a spelling level appropriate for him/her. Spelling, like reading, impacts all areas of our grade two curriculum.
The last several years I have used a spelling program, Spell and Write, in addition to the Sitton Program, which has been very successful. I really like the program because it contains a reading and language component in addition to the spelling. This program will also allow me to place your child at a level that meets his/her spelling needs. (FYI – This program runs on a two week cycle.
Week 1 – Spelling list and practice papers
Week 2 – Same Spelling list and more practice papers; test
On Monday your child will be bringing home his/her first spelling list, which contains eight to twelve spelling words depending on which level your child is placed. Please encourage your child to use their BEST handwriting and to READ the directions. Neatness counts!
Your child will have a spelling test the every other Wednesday to determine if he/she mastered the spelling words for the two weeks. If a score of 100% is achieved, then your child earns a Ö++ (or 100%) for that week and will be excused from the test on Friday. If your child does not achieve a score of 100% on Wednesday then he/she can retest on Friday, and hopefully earn the Ö++. If for some reason there is no school scheduled for a Friday (teacher workshop, holiday, etc.) then the second try will be on Thursday.
Thank you in advance for helping your child learn some good homework habits.
Sincerely,
Brenda Wight
